Last night, the Rotaract Club of South Brisbane held our annual International Dinner.
This year’s dinner was held to help raise money for birthing kits for the women of Papua New Guinea to give birth in a more hygienic environment.
The dinner was held at COTAH in Southbank and attracted 50 guests who generously helped us raise just over $700! With the average kit costing just under $1, this equals over 700 kits!
Our thanks go to the following guests who made our night extra special:
DGE Nick Curry and wife Jan, PDG Don Hay and wife Ailsa (who attended as the representative of the birthing kits project), Rotarians Joe Thompson, Glendon Young and David Gardner (our auctioneer for the night).
We would also like to thank the following people/companies who provided support/prizes on the night:
- Laura and the wait staff from COTAH in Southbank who did a wonderful job
- Alisha Radford (our very own tupperware lady!)
- Suncorp Stadium
- Pocket Aces Over Kings (Brendan Hardy)
- The Entertainment Book
- our President Elect Hayley Gardner (for the lovely decorations)
- Parkland Wholesale Flowers (especially Tina who put the table settings together)
Everyone had a fantastic night and we hope to see you all again at next years dinner!

On Saturday 6th March, Adopt a Road signs were installed on Jane St West End in recognition of Rotaract’s efforts to regularly clean up the street.
Adopt a Road is an initiative of Brisbane City Council and Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland.
If you’re driving through West End, check out our signs! One is on the corner of Jane and Boundary Streets. The other is on the corner of Jane St and Montague Rd.
Well the night has now been and gone and may I say it was a wonderful success!
We had over 190 guests come along to our Valentine’s Day movie night (selling out the whole cinema!), who mixed and mingled and were treated to champagne and nibbles at our pre-movie function. Guests were also given a chance to buy raffle tickets, of which the proceeds went directly to our Philippines Dental Mission.
Once inside the theatre, the raffle prizes were drawn, with some very happy winners and then the movie rolled on screen.
From all reports, guests had a fantastic time. Thanks go to Emilie and Sharni for all their efforts on the night. As a result, the club was able to raise over $2,000 for the Dental Mission in the Philippines.
Thanks to all those guests who came along and also to the following companies who provided support on the night in the way of raffle prize donations:
- Aspley Optical House
- Brisbane Comedy Festival (Comedian Mel Buttle)
- Brisbane City Blooms
- The Coffee Club (West End)
- The Revival Lounge
- Super Butcher
- Black Dove Body Bar
- Fusion Hot Yoga
- Flower & Hart Lawyers
- Suncorp Stadium
- Beaurepaires (Rocklea)
- Gavin Fernan (our muso for the night)

It’s that time again – time for our 5th week social night (or social afternoon in this case).
You’ve been hearing about this for weeks and now it’s finally here! Clear the afternoon, forget about lame excuses to visit family or clean the apartment! It’s time to kick back and have a drink and a laugh while you work out how to play the crazy old game of croquet.
Also bring along your mates! The more the merrier!

The 09/10 year has gotten off to a flying start for our International Committee who have begun their first project; supporting an exciting Rotary dental mission taking place throughout communities in the Philippines.
Several Rotary Clubs with the help of the Cataract Foundation have been carrying out eye and ear missions in the Philippines for a number of years and noticed a need for dental issues of the local people to be addressed. This year a dental aspect will be added to the mission.
A team of volunteers, including one of our own Rotaractors Sharni Bartlett, will be working alongside local dentists, the majority of which are members of the participating local Rotary Clubs. The primary concern of the dental mission will be oral health education for the local school children as well as carrying out emergency dental treatment wherever possible.
To support this worthy project, the International Committee with the help of all the South Brisbane Rotaract club members, are collecting toothbrushes to send over to the Phillipines with Sharni, all of which will be used throughout the dental mission. We are aiming to collect 2,00 toothbrushes, so we have quite a challenge ahead of us, but one we are confident we can achieve.
Please donate any toothbrushes you might collect from hotels, planes etc or alternatively you could pop into your local supermarket and buy a toothbrush (or two!). We would also love donations of floss and toothpaste if you can spare some. (Please note we only want new and unused items!)
Donations must be received by the 1st of October 2009, and donations can be made to any of our club members.
For more info, feel free to send us an email.
You can also download and distribute our flyer Toothbrush Drive Flyer to help encourage donations.
