Carindale Billycart Championships

Events No Comments »

On 22 August, we rolled up our sleeves, and lent a hand at the Carindale Billycart Championships. We warmed up on registration, but had the most fun of the day on ‘track control’, where we helped move the carts at the end of each race.

Thanks to Laura, Alisha, Reece, Brooke, Caroline and Elizabeth for helping out – I think everyone agreed it was a great day.

Putt Putt fun…5th week social night

Announcements, Events No Comments »

What a great way to start the new Rotaract year! On Thursday 29 July we celebrated our first 5th week social night of 2010/11 with a great night of Putt Putt at Victoria Park.

Dinner was fantastic, and gelati delicious. Oh, and the golf was good fun too! Congrats to the winners of each team, and the stand-out performances – Tiffany with two hole-in-ones; Alisha who was able to play and talk on the phone at the same time; Kylie who managed to lose a ball over the fence and out of the course – and congratulations to Laura and Reece’s teams who both completed the whole 18 holes!

Thanks to Caz for organising such a fun night – can’t wait for the next one in September.

PNG International Dinner

Events No Comments »

Last night, the Rotaract Club of South Brisbane held our annual International Dinner.

This year’s dinner was held to help raise money for birthing kits for the women of Papua New Guinea to give birth in a more hygienic environment.

The dinner was held at COTAH in Southbank and attracted 50 guests who generously helped us raise just over $700!  With the average kit costing just under $1, this equals over 700 kits!

Our thanks go to the following guests who made our night extra special:

DGE Nick Curry and wife Jan, PDG Don Hay and wife Ailsa (who attended as the representative of the birthing kits project), Rotarians Joe Thompson, Glendon Young and David Gardner (our auctioneer for the night).

We would also like to thank the following people/companies who provided support/prizes on the night:

- Laura and the wait staff from COTAH in Southbank who did a wonderful job

- Alisha Radford (our very own tupperware lady!)

- Suncorp Stadium

- Pocket Aces Over Kings (Brendan Hardy)

- The Entertainment Book

- our President Elect Hayley Gardner (for the lovely decorations)

- Parkland Wholesale Flowers (especially Tina who put the table settings together)

Everyone had a fantastic night and we hope to see you all again at next years dinner!

Big Issue Street Soccer National Championships 2009

Events No Comments »

The Big Issue Street Soccer National Championships were held in Brisbane this year, and you guessed it, the Rotaract Club of South Brisbane was there to lend a hand.

The Street Soccer program began in 2003, and uses physical activity, in the form of organised sport, as a catalyst for transforming lives by reconnecting the homeless with the community.

The event was held at the Cultural Forecourt at Southbank, with two 22m inflatable pitches set up along the Brisbane River.  The day was split into two sessions. The morning session consisted of the Corporate Cup, which saw Corporate teams battle it out for the trophy.

But all eyes were on the main event, the National Championships, which was held in the afternoon.  Although the Queensland team placed an admirable 4th, the battle between the NSW team and the VIC Metro team still attracted many on-lookers from the public.

The Rotaractors were kept busy with many tasks throughout the day, such as time keeping, score keeping (although this could be debated with our PP Renee needing a few tips on how to use the score-board properly!), helping out with food & drinks, and the most challenging task – keeping (or should I say retrieving) soccer balls out of the Brisbane River!

A great day was had by all, with Vic Metro taking out first place.  It should be pointed out that the National Championships also facilitates the selection of the team to represent Australia at the 2009 Homeless Cup which this year will be held in Milan!

For more information please see the Big Issue website (which can be found to the right under ‘Links’).

Operation Aargh… a race around the Brisbane CBD

Events No Comments »
It was our very own Amazing Race; on a beautiful Sunday morning, 7 teams of Rotaractors and friends turned up at the Roma Street Parklands to compete in a challenge around the Brisbane CBD.
Each team was told to bring a camera and their running shoes, and were given a list of challenges to complete in only a few hours.  Some challenges were simple (collect as many pub coasters as you can), and others were more complex (get strangers to spell out the word ‘Rotaract’ with their bodies).  Others were down-right embarrassing (busking in the Queen St mall anyone?), but overall, fun was the main objective.
As the teams made it back to base, the Operation Aargh team (Emilie, Mel, Laura and Steven) provided everyone with a BBQ lunch and tallied up the results.
Congratulations to all those who joined in the fun, and for those who didn’t, hopefully we will be holding Operation Aargh annually, so you will have to get involved next time!

Christmas Party: 14th December

Rotaract Club of South Brisbane 2008 Christmas Party.

So we didn’t end up going away for the weekend (due to most people being busy during the silly season) – but it can be postponed to a later date.  Instead we spent the day hanging out at the beach and enjoying a BBQ. Elizabeth, Alex, Kylie, Bella, Sian, Bec, Chris, Renee, Brianna, Levi, Brooke, Brett, Alisha, Dave and Merril all came to eat, drink, swim, bake and be Merry!!!

As part of our Christmas party we all brought a small children’s gift, which Alex then took to put under the Kmart Wishing Tree. They were very grateful for the huge bag of gifts we gave them – and it felt heaps better than secret santa.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!!!!

Big Issue Christmas Party – 05/12/08

Events No Comments »

The 5th Annual Big Issue Christmas Party was held on the 5th December 2008. What a fantastic day it turned out to be.

Luke, Mel, Emilie, Kylie, Bella, Hayley, Renee, Caroline, Tanya B and a lot of others attended the event and made it into the fabulous day it ended up as. All the vendors feasted on a BBQ, with Salads and Dessert, and they loved their toothbrushes and toothpaste we gave them as Christmas presents. As there was a lot of food left over, we took it all to the homeless shelter.

A huge thank you to all those people who helped out on the day, and to everyone else in the club that helped make the day a great success by selling all those cakes, puddings, and shortbread.
