Announcements No Comments »

It’s that time again – time for our 5th week social night (or social afternoon in this case).

You’ve been hearing about this for weeks and now it’s finally here! Clear the afternoon, forget about lame excuses to visit family or clean the apartment! It’s time to kick back and have a drink and a laugh while you work out how to play the crazy old game of croquet.

Also bring along your mates! The more the merrier!

International Committee Project – Toothbrush Drive

Projects No Comments »

The 09/10 year has gotten off to a flying start for our International Committee who have begun their first project; supporting an exciting Rotary dental mission taking place throughout communities in the Philippines.

Several Rotary Clubs with the help of the Cataract Foundation have been carrying out eye and ear missions in the Philippines for a number of years and noticed a need for dental issues of the local people to be addressed. This year a dental aspect will be added to the mission.

A team of volunteers, including one of our own Rotaractors Sharni Bartlett, will be working alongside local dentists, the majority of which are members of the participating local Rotary Clubs. The primary concern of the dental mission will be oral health education for the local school children as well as carrying out emergency dental treatment wherever possible.

To support this worthy project, the International Committee with the help of all the South Brisbane Rotaract club members, are collecting toothbrushes to send over to the Phillipines with Sharni, all of which will be used throughout the dental mission.  We are aiming to collect 2,00 toothbrushes, so we have quite a challenge ahead of us, but one we are confident we can achieve.

Please donate any toothbrushes you might collect from hotels, planes etc or alternatively you could pop into your local supermarket and buy a toothbrush (or two!). We would also love donations of floss and toothpaste if you can spare some. (Please note we only want new and unused items!)

Donations must be received by the 1st of October 2009, and donations can be made to any of our club members.

For more info, feel free to send us an email.

You can also download and distribute our flyer Toothbrush Drive Flyer to help encourage donations.

Big Issue Street Soccer National Championships 2009

Events No Comments »

The Big Issue Street Soccer National Championships were held in Brisbane this year, and you guessed it, the Rotaract Club of South Brisbane was there to lend a hand.

The Street Soccer program began in 2003, and uses physical activity, in the form of organised sport, as a catalyst for transforming lives by reconnecting the homeless with the community.

The event was held at the Cultural Forecourt at Southbank, with two 22m inflatable pitches set up along the Brisbane River.  The day was split into two sessions. The morning session consisted of the Corporate Cup, which saw Corporate teams battle it out for the trophy.

But all eyes were on the main event, the National Championships, which was held in the afternoon.  Although the Queensland team placed an admirable 4th, the battle between the NSW team and the VIC Metro team still attracted many on-lookers from the public.

The Rotaractors were kept busy with many tasks throughout the day, such as time keeping, score keeping (although this could be debated with our PP Renee needing a few tips on how to use the score-board properly!), helping out with food & drinks, and the most challenging task – keeping (or should I say retrieving) soccer balls out of the Brisbane River!

A great day was had by all, with Vic Metro taking out first place.  It should be pointed out that the National Championships also facilitates the selection of the team to represent Australia at the 2009 Homeless Cup which this year will be held in Milan!

For more information please see the Big Issue website (which can be found to the right under ‘Links’).

Operation Aargh… a race around the Brisbane CBD

Events No Comments »
It was our very own Amazing Race; on a beautiful Sunday morning, 7 teams of Rotaractors and friends turned up at the Roma Street Parklands to compete in a challenge around the Brisbane CBD.
Each team was told to bring a camera and their running shoes, and were given a list of challenges to complete in only a few hours.  Some challenges were simple (collect as many pub coasters as you can), and others were more complex (get strangers to spell out the word ‘Rotaract’ with their bodies).  Others were down-right embarrassing (busking in the Queen St mall anyone?), but overall, fun was the main objective.
As the teams made it back to base, the Operation Aargh team (Emilie, Mel, Laura and Steven) provided everyone with a BBQ lunch and tallied up the results.
Congratulations to all those who joined in the fun, and for those who didn’t, hopefully we will be holding Operation Aargh annually, so you will have to get involved next time!

Annual Rotary District Conference: 13-15th March 2009

Annual Rotary District Conference: 13-15th March 2009 at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast

This is an awesome event in the Rotaract year. Not only do we get to network with other Rotary clubs in our district (9630), but we also get to listen to some amazing speakers, who are involved in all sorts of fantastic work for others, both in Australia and overseas.

We have now had 3 options for accomodation given to us;  we now need to book ASAP as it is only 2 months away.  Hopefully all Rotaractors will stay in the same Hotel and we can organise activities together – and just have tons of fun.

Last year the Rotaract Club of South Brisbane had a fantastic turnout with 15 members attending – all the Rotarians remember who we are, as we were a sea of green in our wonderful club shirts. Next year we would love it if we could have even more members attend.

We have some fun ideas for the Governor’s ball – but these you will be told of in the next 2 months…. so stay tuned.

Christmas Party: 14th December

Rotaract Club of South Brisbane 2008 Christmas Party.

So we didn’t end up going away for the weekend (due to most people being busy during the silly season) – but it can be postponed to a later date.  Instead we spent the day hanging out at the beach and enjoying a BBQ. Elizabeth, Alex, Kylie, Bella, Sian, Bec, Chris, Renee, Brianna, Levi, Brooke, Brett, Alisha, Dave and Merril all came to eat, drink, swim, bake and be Merry!!!

As part of our Christmas party we all brought a small children’s gift, which Alex then took to put under the Kmart Wishing Tree. They were very grateful for the huge bag of gifts we gave them – and it felt heaps better than secret santa.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!!!!

Project Uplift

Projects No Comments »

Project Uplift has been a major success with hundreds (possibly thousands) of bras collected

Our latest International project to come to an end, was collecting Bras of all sizes for Project Uplift. Disadvantaged women in the third world often live without a bra. Second hand bras are sometimes available cheaply, but are rare in larger sizes. A new bra, if available, can cost about 10 hours wages, beyond reach for most.

Rashes, fungal infections and abscesses (intertrigo) occur between the breast and the chest wall. Bras will help. Since 2005, Uplift, through Rotary Austalia World Community Service, has sent bras through secure channels, making sure they get to the women who need them without compromising their dignity.

Sports bras (for farm work,) and Nursing bras were desperately needed but all second-hand bras were welcome, and worn out bras can be used for spare parts and strap extenders. New bras may also be taken into some countries. The biggest sizes were the most needed and the hardest to get. Every bra donated will become the only bra a particular woman owns.

Even though we have officially finished collecting bras, we have put a couple of boxes into the local councillors offices and will continue to unofficially collect bras for the next 6 months or so, and then hopefully we will push another drive at a later date (since this has been such a popular project with all).
